Description
A dry suit zip is the single most expensive component on the suit and the one most likely to be ruined by neglect. Salt crystallises between the teeth, the hinges stiffen, and forcing a stiff zip is what strips it. This cylindrical paraffin stick is drawn along the metal hinges of a dry or semi-dry suit to protect them, keeping the action smooth so the zip is closed by hand rather than hauled shut. Doing it as routine after a rinse is the point: the cost of the stick is negligible against a zip replacement, and a zip kept waxed lasts years longer than one that is not. It is a 26 gram stick finished in black and yellow, small enough to live in a kit bag permanently. That answers a dry suit, a semi-dry and a suit stored between seasons. It suits any dry or semi-dry suit owner.
