Divemaster
This is where recreational diving ends and professional diving begins.
Every diver reaches a point where "how much can I see" starts turning into "how much can I do." PADI Divemaster is that turning point, formalised. It's the first professional level in the PADI system, the certification that lets you assist instructors, lead certified divers on guided dives, and get paid to do the thing you already do for fun.
This isn't a quick add-on to your logbook. It's a genuine step change, in your knowledge, your in-water skill, and your ability to take responsibility for other divers rather than just yourself. Instructor-level dive theory, rescue skills refined to demonstration quality, watermanship, stamina, and leadership under real conditions, all of it evaluated properly, not just taught. All scuba equipment is included for the duration of the course, so there's nothing to source or hire beforehand, you arrive ready to train.
By the end, you'll have completed dives across a genuine range of conditions, deep, wreck, drift, reef, navigation, and underwater mapping, alongside dive leadership exercises that put your planning and problem-solving under real scrutiny.
Where Divemaster Takes You
Once certified, you're qualified to supervise certified divers during recreational diving, assist instructors on training courses, and run select PADI programmes independently. It's globally recognised, opening up genuine work opportunities both locally at dive operators here in South Africa and internationally, wherever diving happens and dive centres need staff.
Divemaster is also the prerequisite for the next step up, PADI Instructor, if teaching is where you eventually want to take this. Even if it isn't, it counts toward Master Scuba Diver, and simply puts you in a different category of diver: the one other people look to underwater.

Frequently Asked Questions
How many logged dives do I need to start the Divemaster course?
You need a minimum of 40 logged dives to begin formal training, building to 60 logged dives, including deep, night, and navigation experience, by the time you're certified.
Do I need Rescue Diver before starting Divemaster?
Yes. PADI Rescue Diver, or a qualifying equivalent from another agency, is a hard prerequisite, along with current Emergency First Response training completed within the past 24 months.
Can I start Divemaster training before turning 18?
Divers aged 15 to 17 with at least 20 logged dives and Advanced Open Water and Rescue Diver certifications may enrol in PADI Junior Divemaster, completing much of the course ahead of turning 18, when full Divemaster certification becomes available.
How long does the Divemaster course take to complete?
It varies depending on your existing experience and how the practical sessions are scheduled, but it's a genuine multi-week commitment rather than a weekend course, reflecting the depth of skill and leadership development involved.
What can I actually do once I'm certified as a Divemaster?
You're qualified to supervise certified divers during recreational diving, assist instructors on PADI courses, conduct select programmes independently, and work professionally at dive centres and resorts worldwide, locally in South Africa or internationally. It's also the prerequisite for PADI Instructor training.
