Equipment Specialist
SKU EQS001
The gear you dive in isn't a mystery box. This course opens it up.
Most divers can tell you their BCD is comfortable and their regulator breathes easily, and that's about where the knowledge stops. What's actually happening inside that first stage, why one wetsuit thickness suits one dive site and not another, how to spot a problem with your gear before it becomes a problem on a dive, none of that gets covered by simply owning the equipment.
The PADI Equipment Specialist course fixes that gap. All course equipment and learning materials are included for the duration of the course, so there's nothing extra to source beforehand. There's no in-water component to this one, no dives required, just a genuinely practical, hands-on look at how your gear works, how to look after it properly, and how to handle the kind of minor field repairs that can otherwise end a dive early.
It's not a repair course in the professional sense, and it won't turn you into a technician. What it will do is turn you into the diver who knows exactly what's wrong when a strap snaps or an O-ring fails, and what to do about it before the dive's over.
Where Equipment Specialist Takes You
Once certified, you'll understand the theory and operation behind cylinders, regulators, BCDs, wetsuits and drysuits, computers, and the rest of the gear you already use, along with proper care and maintenance procedures that meaningfully extend how long that gear lasts.
You'll also walk away knowing how to put together a save-a-dive kit, the small spares and tools experienced divers carry precisely so a minor equipment hiccup doesn't turn into a cancelled dive. It's one of the specialty certifications that counts toward PADI Master Scuba Diver, and it pairs naturally with owning your own gear, since the knowledge applies directly to whatever you're already diving in.
Ready to actually understand your gear instead of just trusting it? Book your Equipment Specialist course below, or get in touch with our team if you've got questions about how it applies to the gear you already own.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Equipment Specialist course involve any dives?
No. Equipment Specialist is unusual among PADI specialties in that it requires no open water dives, just eLearning and a hands-on practical session with your instructor.
Will Equipment Specialist teach me to repair my own equipment?
Not in the professional servicing sense, no. It's designed to give you a genuine working understanding of your gear and the confidence to handle basic field repairs, not to replace a qualified equipment technician for full servicing.
Do I need my own gear for the Equipment Specialist course?
It helps, since the knowledge applies directly to whatever you already dive in, but it isn't required. All course equipment is included for the duration of the session either way.
What's a save-a-dive kit, and will I learn to build one?
Yes. A save-a-dive kit is a small set of spares and tools, extra O-rings, cable ties, a spare mask strap, and similar items, that experienced divers carry so a minor equipment issue doesn't end a dive early. Building one is part of this course.
Does Equipment Specialist count toward Master Scuba Diver?
Yes. It's one of the specialty certifications that can count toward the PADI Master Scuba Diver rating, the highest non-professional classification in recreational diving.
