The most useful thing anyone can do for a diving injury, and most divers can't do it.

If a diver surfaces with suspected decompression illness or a lung overexpansion injury, the single most effective thing available before they reach a chamber is oxygen, administered properly and quickly. It is genuinely that important, and it is genuinely that simple. What isn't simple is doing it correctly under pressure with an unfamiliar kit.

The PADI Emergency Oxygen Provider course fixes that. You'll learn to recognise the diving illnesses that oxygen helps, assemble and disassemble an emergency oxygen kit without fumbling, and use the different delivery systems on a casualty who's breathing and one who isn't.

There are no dives and no diving prerequisite. That's deliberate, and it means boat crew, dive club members and non-diving partners can take it alongside divers, which is often exactly who's standing there when it matters.

Why This One Matters More Than Its Length Suggests

On most South African dive sites there's a meaningful gap between an incident and proper medical care. Sodwana, Aliwal, the inland sites, a boat an hour offshore: that gap can run to hours, and it's precisely the window where oxygen changes outcomes.

The course is short, practical and inexpensive, and it pairs naturally with First Aid Primary & Secondary Care and Rescue Diver. It also counts toward your Master Scuba Diver rating if you're a certified diver.

Worth an afternoon of anyone's time. Book Emergency Oxygen Provider below, or get in touch with our team if you'd like to arrange it for a club or a group.

What This Course Entails

Knowledge development covers the diving illnesses that emergency oxygen helps, principally decompression illness and lung overexpansion injuries, how to recognise them, and why oxygen is so effective as a first response.

Skill development is hands-on and can be run anywhere sensible, from a classroom to a boat deck to the poolside. You'll assemble and disassemble an emergency oxygen system until it's routine, and work with the different delivery systems, including a demand inhalator valve for a breathing casualty and a non-rebreather mask where that isn't appropriate.

There are no dives and no water sessions at any point, and the course runs in around two to three hours. It can also be used as an enhanced substitute for the emergency oxygen training within the PADI Rescue Diver course, and we're happy to run it for clubs or groups on request.

Prerequisites

None. There is no diving certification prerequisite, and the course is open to divers and non-divers alike.
No minimum age. Students need only be old enough to complete the performance requirements, so this is a genuinely sensible course for a diving family to do together.
First aid and CPR training is recommended but not required.
No water sessions are involved, so no health screening is needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be a diver to take this course?

No. There's no diving prerequisite and no water sessions. Anyone who spends time around divers can take it, which makes it a genuinely sensible course for boat crew, dive club committee members and non-diving partners as well as divers.

Why does emergency oxygen matter so much in diving?

Because for a suspected decompression illness or lung overexpansion injury, oxygen administered promptly is the single most effective thing anyone can do before the casualty reaches a chamber. The gap between the incident and proper medical care is exactly where this training earns its keep, and on a remote dive site that gap can be hours.

What does the course actually cover?

Recognising the diving illnesses that oxygen helps, assembling and disassembling an emergency oxygen kit, and using the different delivery systems, including a demand valve and a non-rebreather mask, on both breathing and non-breathing casualties. It's short, practical, and there are no dives involved.

How long does the Emergency Oxygen Provider course take?

Two to three hours. There are no dives and no water sessions, and it can be run in a classroom, on a boat deck or at the poolside, which makes it easy to attach to something else you're already doing.

Does it count toward Master Scuba Diver?

Yes, if you're a certified diver it counts as one of your five specialities. Given it's short, inexpensive and involves no dives, it's one of the more efficient ways to add a speciality to your record, and rather more useful than most.
