Shearwater in South Africa
Shearwater Research started in 2004 and designs and builds its dive computers in Vancouver, Canada. Its founder, Bruce Partridge, came to the business from advanced technical diving, and the company still supplies control electronics to rebreather makers. The decompression model is Buhlmann with gradient factors. The Perdix 2 Ti and Petrel 3 add VPM-B and DCIEM as paid options. To compare brands, see all dive computers.
Choosing a model
The Peregrine is the entry point: a 2.2-inch colour screen, air and nitrox, and a rechargeable battery. Its sibling, the Peregrine TX, reads cylinder pressure from up to four Swift transmitters. Watch-sized and AMOLED, the Tern and Tern TX add a freediving mode. A sapphire lens and closed-circuit modes to 200 metres set the Teric apart. For trimix and rebreather dives, the Perdix 2 Ti, Perdix 3 and Petrel 3 run on one AA cell that can be changed on a boat deck. The NERD 2 floats its display in front of one eye. The deeper-rated models sit under technical computers.
Buying and servicing in Johannesburg
Every Shearwater computer qualifies for free delivery anywhere in South Africa, or it can be collected from the shop in Glenvista. The two-year worldwide warranty is tied to the serial number, so it passes to a new owner and needs no registration. Shearwater recommends a general service every two years, and the shop books it with the maker's appointed agent through the servicing desk.
Questions we get asked
Where can I buy a Shearwater dive computer in South Africa?
Scuba Evolution sells the Shearwater range online and at Shop U44, Glenvista Shopping Centre, Johannesburg, from the Peregrine to the Petrel 3 and NERD 2. Every computer qualifies for free delivery anywhere in South Africa, because free delivery starts at R1,500.
What warranty comes with a Shearwater dive computer?
Shearwater gives a worldwide two-year warranty on its products. It is linked to the computer's serial number rather than the owner, so no registration is needed and it carries over to a second owner. Accidental damage, negligence and unauthorised repairs aren't covered.
How is a Shearwater battery replaced or the computer serviced?
The Perdix 2 Ti, Perdix 3 and Petrel 3 take a single AA cell that the diver changes under the battery cap, while the Peregrine, Tern and Teric recharge on their own chargers. Shearwater recommends a general service every two years, which the Glenvista shop books with the maker's appointed agent.
