Suunto in South Africa

Suunto was founded in Finland in 1936 by Tuomas Vohlonen, who started with a liquid-filled compass. Its first diving compass, the SK-4, followed in 1965, and its first dive computer in 1987. The shop carries the current computers, the SK-8 compass, gauge modules and spares.

Choosing a Suunto

The Zoop Novo is the entry point, on a CR2450 cell that a dive centre changes in minutes. The D5 and Ocean read cylinder pressure through a Tank POD, and the Ocean adds GPS, wrist heart rate and a sapphire crystal. The Nautic puts a 3.26-inch AMOLED on the wrist. The EON Core and EON Steel are rebreather-capable, and the EON Steel takes up to ten trimix gases. Compare them in wrist computers and air-integrated computers.

Transmitters: check the fit first

Suunto makes two transmitters that aren't interchangeable. The current Tank POD pairs with the Ocean, D5, Nautic, Nautic S, EON Core and EON Steel. The older Wireless Tank Pressure Transmitter pairs with the D4i Novo, Vyper Novo and earlier models. The wrong one won't pair, so check the computer before ordering from transmitters. Battery changes and repairs are booked at the Glenvista shop.
