Communicator

Description

A tank banger and a horn both work, and both are indiscriminate: everyone on the site hears them, which turns a signal meant for one buddy into an alarm for the whole group. Volume is the design decision here, and this sits at the level where a buddy a few metres away turns round and nobody else does. It is a sealed tube with a steel ball inside; shaken underwater it carries far enough to get attention without clearing a reef. It is lightweight, sealed against water, and clips to a BCD D-ring so it is reachable without a search. Most of what a diver needs to say underwater is addressed to one person, and this covers it without the mask coming off or the slate coming out. It is a signalling device rather than an emergency one, so a surface marker, whistle or air horn remain the tools for trouble at the surface. It suits a diver calling a buddy without alarming the site.
