Whistle

Description

No gas, no battery, no mechanism to deploy: there is nothing inside a whistle to fail, which is why one is still working in its fifth season while other safety kit has expired or corroded. A diver surfacing two hundred metres off the boat in a Cape swell is a head in chop and hard to see, and sound carries where a raised arm does not, at almost no cost in breath. It clips to the inflator hose or a shoulder D-ring, and on the corrugated hose it sits inside the arc one hand sweeps while the other stays on a regulator or a line, so it is found without looking down. Fitting needs no tools. One whistle per rig, so a buddy pair takes two. It signals on the surface and does nothing at depth, where a tank banger passes the message. It is not a substitute for a surface marker buoy: the whistle tells a skipper someone is out there, the SMB tells the skipper where. It suits any diver adding a surface signal.
