Reef Hook

Description

Holding station in current costs gas and hands, and a diver gripping rock with both is a diver not watching whatever the current brought in. A hook set on dead substrate takes that job over. The steel hook here is deliberately oversized, since a wide gape finds purchase on the first attempt and a large hook can be placed on bare rock rather than threaded into anything living. Its coiled lanyard is plastic coated so the cable cannot mark a drysuit or a bladder, and the coil keeps the assembly short on a harness instead of trailing as a loop. Bright colouring makes it findable on a cluttered boat deck. Clipped to a chest D-ring, it is set and released under control rather than allowed to snap back. It suits a drift site, a channel dive or any reef where current runs hard.
