humangear in South Africa

humangear was started in San Francisco in 2007 by Chris Miksovsky, and it makes reusable travel, outdoor and storage products. The company says everything it makes is designed to last a lifetime. For divers, that means toiletries that survive a flight, food that survives a dive bag and utensils that aren't single-use plastic. Everything we carry is in travel and outdoor accessories.

Toiletries and small things

The GoToob+ Squeezable Travel Bottle is soft silicone that squeezes out the last drop, with a wide opening for filling, a base it stands on and the LoopLock collar that stops the cap opening by accident. The small, medium and large sizes are approved for air travel. For shampoo, conditioner and sunscreen in one go, the GoToob+ 3 Pack Medium gives three 74 ml tubes.

For things that won't squeeze out of a tube, such as pills, spare o-rings, coins or small parts, the GoTubb opens with a one-handed squeeze. The GoTubb 3 Pack holds about 86 cc per tub and the GoTubb 2 Pack Large about 170 cc, enough for some round bars of soap.

Food on the move

Stax containers twist together into one stack with a ClipHandle, and silicone-gasket lids seal them. The Stax 4 Pack suits snacks and toiletries, and the Stax XL Eat System carries a proper meal for a long day at an inland dive site. For eating, the GoKit Light locks a plate and bowl together with a GoBites Uno inside, and the GoKit Deluxe adds the cupCUP, a double-wall mug that splits into two cups. The FlexiBowl squashes flat in a bag and holds about 700 ml.

Utensils and cups

The GoBites Uno is a fork and spoon in one, in the standard size or the smaller Uno Mini for kids and lunch boxes. The GoBites Trio is a full knife, fork and spoon in a case, with a bottle opener in the knife, and the GoBites Duo gives a real fork and spoon that join end to end. The GoCup collapses to a puck for a toiletry bag, though it isn't meant as a leak-proof container.

Questions we get asked

Can I fly with humangear GoToob+ bottles?

humangear says the small, medium and large GoToob+ sizes are approved for air travel, and the volume is marked on the silicone for security checks. Follow your airline's liquids rules for the total amount.

Are humangear products food safe?

The Stax, GoBites and GoTubb ranges are made from FDA food-safe materials and are BPA-free, PC-free and phthalate-free, according to the product information.

Is the GoCup leak-proof?

No. The GoCup lid has air vents so the cup dries out, which means it isn't meant for carrying liquids. Use a Stax container with a gasket lid or a GoToob+ for that.

Which GoBites utensil should I choose?

The Uno is a single fork and spoon tool, the Uno Mini is a smaller version for kids or compact kits, the Duo gives a separate fork and spoon, and the Trio adds a knife with a bottle opener in a case.
