A700 Second Stage

Description

Most second stages put the working parts inside a technopolymer shell. The A700 machines both the casing and the valve housing from metal, and the reason is thermal: metal draws heat out of the surrounding water and into the mechanism, which lowers the freezing potential of the valve exactly when a long cold dive would otherwise start to bite. The valve is air balanced, so inhalation effort stays level as depth increases and cylinder pressure falls, rated at 0.5 joules per litre with airflow of 2000 litres per minute at 200 bar. A micrometric knob sets breathing effort and a realigned VIVA lever sets venturi assistance, which also shuts off the free flow an unattended octopus would produce. Maximum low pressure input is 14 bar. The metal housing holds moisture inside the second stage, which cuts the dry mouth that follows a long dive. It suits a diver breathing hard in cold water.
