Description

Inflating an SMB is the easy half. What goes wrong is the line, and a reel rather than a spool is what a diver wants when it has to be recovered under tension: the handle and ratchet do the winding, so line comes back onto the drum evenly instead of being coiled by hand while the buoy pulls at the other end. The ratchet also locks the drum, which is what stops a reel running away as a buoy rises and drags line out faster than a hand can control, so the buoy goes up on a controlled line and the diver stays at their stop rather than being taken up with it. Capacity is 75 metres, the working length for recreational SMB deployment, deep enough for sport profiles without the bulk of a technical reel. Out of use it hangs off a harness D-ring. Deploy from a reel or a spool rather than a hand-held loop, and let go rather than fight one that jams. It suits a recreational diver deploying an SMB from depth.
