Big Blue Surface Marker Buoy

Description

An SMB is the only thing standing between a diver on the surface and a boat that has not seen them, and the two colours exist because the sea does not treat them the same. Orange reads as a signal against blue water and is the recognised distress colour once a strobe or a torch is behind it. Fluorescent yellow holds contrast in flat light, glare and the low sun of an early or late dive, when orange starts to disappear into the water. Both carry reflective tape for a boat searchlight. Either inflates by mouth or from a second stage, so it goes up on the safety stop without a low pressure hose being disconnected, and a pouch at the top takes a STRB series strobe for a night ascent or a drift pickup. It suits any diver ascending where boat traffic is a risk.
