Cavern Diver
SKU CAV001
Overhead environments, with daylight always behind you. This is where that line gets drawn properly.
There's a hard distinction in diving between an open water dive and an overhead environment. In open water, if something goes badly wrong, up is always an option. Under a ceiling it isn't, and that single fact changes the training, the equipment and the discipline required.
Cavern diving is the controlled introduction to that world. You stay within the light zone, with the entrance and natural daylight always visible behind you, which means you always have a direct visual route out. It's genuine overhead diving, but with the single most important safety margin kept intact.
The course covers the specialised procedures that make that safe: guideline use, finning techniques that don't destroy the visibility behind you, light and equipment redundancy, and the emergency procedures for an environment you can't simply ascend out of. All equipment is included for the duration of the course.
What Cavern Diver Covers, And What It Doesn't
You'll learn cavern dive planning, running and following a guideline, air management with the reserves an overhead environment demands, specialised propulsion techniques, and how to handle a silt-out or a light failure. Training dives stay within the light zone throughout.
It's important to be clear about what this isn't. Cavern Diver is not a cave diving certification, and it does not qualify you to dive beyond the light zone. It's the properly trained entry point to overhead environments, and the honest place to find out whether you want to go further.
Minimum age is 18, and you'll need your Advanced Open Water certification. Book below, or get in touch with our team to talk through whether this is the right next step for you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Cavern Diver a cave diving certification?
No, and this matters. Cavern Diver qualifies you to dive within the light zone only, with the entrance and natural daylight always visible behind you. It does not qualify you to dive beyond that point. Full cave diving is a separate discipline with its own training pathway, and treating a cavern certification as a cave certification is one of the more reliable ways to get killed.
What are the prerequisites for Cavern Diver?
PADI Advanced Open Water Diver and a minimum age of 18. The age requirement is firm, unlike most specialities, which reflects that this is a genuine overhead environment rather than an open water dive with scenery.
What skills does Cavern Diver actually teach?
Cavern dive planning, running and following a guideline, air management with the reserves an overhead environment demands, specialised finning techniques that don't destroy the visibility behind you, and how to handle a silt-out or a light failure when you can't simply ascend.
How closely supervised is the training?
Very, and deliberately so. The ratio for open water training dives is eight students per instructor, but for penetration cavern dives it drops to two students per instructor, and you must be accompanied by a PADI Cavern Diving Instructor throughout. Overhead environments are not where anyone should be one of eight.
Where would I use this certification?
South Africa has some genuinely good cavern and cave systems, and the certification also travels well to destinations like Mexico's cenotes, which are on a great many divers' lists. Talk to us about where you're planning to dive and we'll tell you honestly whether this is the certification you need.
Are air fills included in the course price?
No, and that is deliberate. Air is charged as you use it, per fill, and invoiced to you after your session. Every diver breathes differently, and building a worst-case air allowance into every course fee would mean the lightest breathers subsidising the heaviest, so instead you pay for the air you actually use and the course price stays lower for everyone. We confirm the current fill rate with you when we book your dates, and you are welcome to ask us for it at any point before that. Dive site entrance fees are also paid separately, at the site on the day.
