A team places them at jumps and tie offs so that on the way out the line reads as a record of what was actually done. On a cave dive a cookie at a jump identifies whose line it is when several teams are in the system. On a wreck it marks a point the diver intends to return to. On a complex route it distinguishes a personal marker from the permanent directional arrows already in place.
