Deco Stop Buoy

Description

A decompression stop in open water with nothing to hold onto is where buoyancy control gets tested hardest, and a metre of drift at five metres is easy to miss without a reference. A deco stop buoy gives that reference: it is sent up on a line and holds a fixed depth, so a diver hangs off a known point rather than judging a stop against a moving blue background. On the surface it also tells the boat exactly where a group is decompressing, which is the safety half of the argument in any water with traffic. It is deployed from a spool or reel and inflated at depth, then vents expanding gas as it rises. For a diver moving into staged decompression it is the piece of kit that turns a theoretical stop into a controlled one.
