Description

A head light points wherever the diver is looking, which is exactly the problem when a subject is being approached and exactly the reason a red filter belongs on one. Most marine animals respond poorly to red, so a nocturnal species that would vanish the moment a white beam swept across it will often stay put, and the diver keeps both hands free while it happens. Red also preserves dark adaptation, which matters more on a head light than a hand torch because it is pointed at everything the diver reads, including gauges, slates and a buddy's face.
