Finger Reel

Description

The absence of mechanism is the argument for it. There is no ratchet, no handle and no moving part beyond the spool itself, so there is nothing to jam at the moment the line is running out and a buoy is rising, which is exactly when a reel chooses to. Tension is controlled by a finger against the drum, giving direct feel for how fast line is going and letting it be stopped instantly. Technical divers carry spools for that reason, and most recreational divers who have had a reel jam end up carrying one too. It is compact enough to live in a BCD pocket permanently, and it covers delayed SMB deployment and short line runs. Wind it back on the surface or at the stop, keeping tension so the line does not bed into the coil below it, because a spool wound loose is a spool that jams on the next deployment. The Action Reel is the 75 metre alternative for longer runs. It suits a diver who wants nothing that can jam.
