Big Blue Fluorodiving Mask

Description

Fluorescence diving works by lighting a reef with blue light and looking at what glows back. The difficulty is that far more blue light reflects off the coral than is re-emitted as fluorescence, so without a barrier filter the effect is invisible and the dive is simply a blue one. This mask carries the filter in the lens, which is the practical place for it: nothing has to be held in front of the eyes, nothing can be dropped, and both hands stay free for a camera or a torch. It is the counterpart to the blue excitation light rather than an alternative to it, since neither half produces the effect alone. Filters that fit over a camera port cover the photography side of the same problem. That answers a fluorescence night dive, a coral survey and a marine biology course. It suits any diver using a blue excitation light.
