Master Scuba Diver Trainer
SKU MDT001
Any instructor can teach Open Water. This is the rating that says you can teach the rest of it.
Master Scuba Diver Trainer is where an instructor stops being a generalist. It recognises that you hold five PADI Instructor ratings and have certified 25 divers, which between them mean you can teach across the range and have genuinely done it, rather than simply attended another course.
It's a rating rather than a single course, assembled from Specialty Instructor Training Courses and real teaching. That structure is the point: MSDT can't be rushed, because the certification count won't move any faster than your students do.
Commercially, it's also the rating that changes what a dive centre can offer you. An instructor who can teach five specialities is considerably more employable than one who can teach the core courses alone, particularly abroad.
How MSDT Is Assembled
You'll need five PADI Instructor ratings from any combination of Specialty Instructor ratings, though Peak Performance Buoyancy, PADI AWARE, AWARE Dive Against Debris and Coral Reef Conservation don't count toward the five. One TecRec Instructor rating, one Freediver Instructor rating and one Mermaid Instructor rating may each be counted, but only one of each.
You'll also need to have certified 25 PADI divers, with no more than five from courses without scuba dives and no more than five from PADI Seal Team. It's also the prerequisite for IDC Staff Instructor, and from there Master Instructor.
This is priced on application, because the right combination of Specialty Instructor Training Courses depends entirely on what you want to teach. Get in touch with our team and we'll map out a route.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Master Scuba Diver Trainer?
It's the rating that marks an instructor who can genuinely teach across the range rather than just the core courses. You earn it by holding five PADI Instructor ratings and having certified 25 PADI divers, so it reflects real teaching mileage rather than another course attended.
Which instructor ratings count toward the five?
Any combination of five PADI Specialty Instructor ratings, but Peak Performance Buoyancy, PADI AWARE, AWARE Dive Against Debris and Coral Reef Conservation Specialty Instructor ratings are excluded. You may also count one TecRec Instructor rating, one Freediver Instructor rating and one Mermaid Instructor rating, but only one of each.
How do I get a Specialty Instructor rating?
Two routes. Attend a Specialty Instructor Training Course with a PADI Course Director, or apply directly to your PADI Office if you can demonstrate the required experience. IDC and OWSI candidates can apply for Specialty Instructor certification, but only after passing an Instructor Examination.
Do any Specialty Instructor ratings have extra prerequisites?
Yes, several. Cavern Specialty Instructor requires full Cave Diver certification from a recognised cave diving organisation. Enriched Air requires the PADI Enriched Air Diver certification or a comparable rating. Tell us which specialities you're aiming to teach and we'll confirm exactly what each one needs.
Why does it require 25 certifications?
Because the rating is about teaching experience, not paperwork. There are limits on where those 25 can come from: no more than five from courses without scuba dives, such as Equipment Specialist, PADI AWARE, Freediver or Mermaid, and no more than five from PADI Seal Team. The intention is that you've actually taught a spread of divers.
How long does MSDT take to earn?
It depends entirely on how much you teach. The five Specialty Instructor Training Courses can be done relatively quickly, but the 25 certifications requirement moves at the pace of your students. Instructors working full time often get there within a season; those teaching occasionally take considerably longer.
What comes after MSDT?
IDC Staff Instructor, for which MSDT is a prerequisite alongside the Emergency First Response Instructor rating. From there the pathway runs to Master Instructor and eventually Course Director. MSDT is the point where the professional ladder genuinely opens up.
