Description

Mould a mouthpiece from one compound and it has to be stiff enough to hold its shape, which means the gums get that stiffness for the whole dive. Two compounds split the job: the firmer one carries the bite tabs and the structure, the softer one meets the lips and gums, so the mouthpiece holds position without being clenched. Jaw ache at the end of an hour usually traces to the mouthpiece rather than the technique, and a diver chewing through them is gripping hard to keep water out. Three colours are stocked, blue, grey and red, which also settles whose regulator is whose on a boat where four look the same. Fitment is any second stage on conventional bite tabs, secured by a cable tie or a clamp. Treat it as a consumable and a hygiene item: anything hardened, split at a tab or returned from a rental fleet should be changed. It suits a diver who gets jaw fatigue on long dives.
