Description

Orange and yellow are what everyone else is flying. Pink is not, and against open water that turns a diver from merely visible into identifiable, which is the reason to pick this colour over the common ones. It stands 6 feet, 1.83 metres, which is enough height to clear the chop that hides a head from a coxswain a few hundred metres off, and it goes up on a safety stop, a decompression stop, or after surfacing away from the boat. Inflation is oral through a locking valve, so it does not sag once it is up, and a pocket near the top takes a torch, strobe or chemical light stick for night and low-visibility work. PADI, NAUI and SSI all list a surface marker as required equipment, and it is one of the few things that only earns its keep on the dive that goes wrong. It stows in a BCD pocket. Deploy it from a spool or reel rather than a hand-held loop. It suits any diver surfacing away from a boat.
