Sea & Sea YS-D3 DUO Strobe

Description

Wide angle work asks more of a strobe than macro does, because the light has to reach the corners of a fisheye frame without a hot centre, and do it on the batteries already in the camera bag. The YS-D3 DUO fires two flash tubes through an aspherical toroidal lens for a guide number of 33, and spreads that across 80 x 105 degrees bare or 100 x 110 degrees with the supplied diffuser. On a reef wall shot with a fisheye that covers the frame evenly, and on a night dive the colour coded panel shows the mode without shining a torch on the dials. It runs on four AA cells behind a bayonet cap that twists shut without loading the o-ring. With its ball base fitted it sits close to neutral, so moving it along an arm barely shifts the rig's balance. RC mode was developed with OM Digital Solutions, while DS-TTL II serves other brands through a fibre-optic cable. It suits a photographer who wants wide angle power from AA batteries.
