Underwater Naturalist
SKU UWN001
Stop seeing fish. Start seeing what they're doing.
Most divers spend their first fifty dives looking at things. A turtle, a nudibranch, something large moving in the blue. It's a perfectly good way to dive, but it's the surface of the thing. Every reef you've ever been on is a working system, and once you can read it, a familiar dive site stops being scenery and starts being a story.
The PADI Underwater Naturalist course teaches you to read it. You'll cover aquatic plant and animal habitats, the symbiotic relationships that hold a reef together, and the difference between what an animal is actually doing and what divers commonly assume it's doing. A surprising amount of received wisdom about marine life turns out to be wrong.
It's also the course that quietly makes you better around animals, because understanding behaviour is what stops you blundering into it. Two dives with an instructor, and all scuba equipment is included for the duration of the course.
What Underwater Naturalist Gives You
You'll come away able to identify the major aquatic life groupings you'll meet in South African waters, understand how they interact, and interpret behaviour rather than guess at it. It's the difference between reporting that you saw a cleaner wrasse and understanding why it was allowed to live.
It counts as one of the five specialities toward your Master Scuba Diver rating, and it pairs naturally with Fish Identification and the AWARE conservation courses if the ecology side of diving is what pulls at you.

What This Course Entails
Prerequisites
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to know anything about marine biology first?
Not a thing. The course starts from the assumption that you know nothing beyond what you have picked up on dives, and builds from there. Curiosity is the only prerequisite that matters.
What are the prerequisites for Underwater Naturalist?
A PADI Open Water Diver or Junior Open Water Diver certification, or a qualifying equivalent, and a minimum age of 10. It's one of the more accessible specialities, and one of the few a younger diver can genuinely get absorbed in.
What's the difference between Underwater Naturalist and Fish Identification?
Fish Identification teaches you to name what you're looking at. Underwater Naturalist teaches you to understand what it's doing and why. They complement each other well, and plenty of divers do both, but if you can only pick one, Naturalist changes how you see a dive site more fundamentally.
How many dives does the course involve?
Two open water dives with an instructor, alongside the knowledge development. All scuba equipment is included for the duration of the course.
Does this count toward Master Scuba Diver?
Yes. Underwater Naturalist counts as one of the five specialities required for the PADI Master Scuba Diver rating, alongside Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver and 50 logged dives.
Are air fills included in the course price?
No, and that is deliberate. Air is charged as you use it, per fill, and invoiced to you after your session. Every diver breathes differently, and building a worst-case air allowance into every course fee would mean the lightest breathers subsidising the heaviest, so instead you pay for the air you actually use and the course price stays lower for everyone. We confirm the current fill rate with you when we book your dates, and you are welcome to ask us for it at any point before that. Dive site entrance fees are also paid separately, at the site on the day.
