      Underwater Navigator

      R 3,500.00 ZAR

Be the diver everyone else quietly follows back to the boat.

There's a particular kind of confidence that comes from always knowing where you are underwater, no surfacing to check, no long exhausting swim back because you drifted further than you realised, just a straight, calm line back to your exit point. Most divers never build that skill properly. They rely on the instructor or divemaster to do the thinking for them.

The PADI Underwater Navigator course teaches you to be the one who knows. All scuba equipment, including a compass, is included for the duration of the course, so there's nothing to source or hire beforehand. You'll learn to navigate using both a compass and natural cues, the two skills that, combined, mean you're never genuinely lost underwater again.

It's a deceptively simple-sounding skill that changes how relaxed every dive feels afterwards. Divers who've done this course tend to notice longer, calmer dives immediately, with less air wasted on unnecessary surface swims or backtracking.

      Where Underwater Navigator Takes You

Once certified, you'll navigate confidently using compass headings, natural landmarks, and distance estimation, relocating dive sites, submerged objects, and your own exit point without needing to surface to check. It's the kind of skill that quietly makes you a better dive buddy, and often the diver others end up following.

The first of your three dives can often be credited as an Adventure Dive toward PADI Advanced Open Water Diver, so nothing here goes to waste if you haven't done that certification yet. Underwater Navigator also counts as one of the five specialty certifications toward PADI Master Scuba Diver.

Ready to always know exactly where you are? Book your Underwater Navigator course below, or get in touch with our team if you've got questions first.

      What This Course Entails

The course starts with PADI eLearning, covering navigation patterns, natural navigation techniques, compass use, and dive site relocation, worked through at your own pace before your dives begin.

From there, you'll practise using a compass on the surface before applying it underwater across three open water dives. You'll estimate distance using kick cycles and timing, navigate compass headings including several turns, mark and relocate a submerged object or position from the surface, and put together an underwater map based on what you've navigated.

By your final dive, navigation stops being guesswork and becomes something you can rely on, whether you're using a compass, natural cues, or both together.

      Prerequisites

      • Hold a PADI (Junior) Open Water Diver certification, or qualifying equivalent from another training organisation.
      • Minimum age is 10 years old.
      • Complete a basic health screening questionnaire to confirm you're fit to dive.

      Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need Advanced Open Water before doing this course?

No. Underwater Navigator only requires PADI (Junior) Open Water Diver or a qualifying equivalent. In fact, the first dive can often be credited as an Adventure Dive toward Advanced Open Water, so many divers do it beforehand.

How many dives does the Underwater Navigator course include?

Three open water dives with your instructor, covering compass navigation, natural navigation, distance estimation, and dive site or object relocation.

Do I need my own compass for this course?

No. All scuba equipment, including a compass, is included for the duration of the course. If you decide to keep using one afterwards, we can help you choose your own.

Will this course actually make my dives more relaxing?

Yes, this is one of the most common reasons divers take it. Knowing exactly where you are and how to get back tends to reduce the anxious surface checks and long exhausting swims that eat into both your dive time and your air supply.

Does Underwater Navigator count toward Master Scuba Diver?

Yes. It's one of five specialty certifications required for the PADI Master Scuba Diver rating, the highest non-professional classification in recreational diving.
