Altitude Diver
SKU ALT001
If you learned to dive in Johannesburg, you've already been altitude diving. You just didn't have the paperwork for it.
Here's something most divers never think about: any dive above 300 metres of elevation changes the physics of the dive itself. Reduced surface pressure means standard dive tables and default computer settings quietly stop being accurate. Johannesburg sits at roughly 1,700 metres above sea level, which means every training dive you've done at Bass Lake or Miracle Waters has technically been an altitude dive, whether you knew it or not.
The PADI Altitude Diver course is where that gets formalised. All scuba equipment is included for the duration of the course, so there's nothing to source or hire beforehand, you arrive ready to dive. You'll learn why altitude changes nitrogen absorption, how to adjust your dive computer or tables to account for it, and how to plan and execute a dive properly at elevation instead of relying on sea-level assumptions that don't apply here.
For Johannesburg-based divers particularly, this isn't an exotic specialty for mountain lakes on the other side of the world. It's a correction to a gap that likely exists in your training already.
Where Altitude Diver Takes You
Once certified, you'll be equipped to plan and dive safely at elevation anywhere in the world, from high-altitude lakes to the inland sites you already dive locally. It removes the guesswork from a part of diving that's easy to overlook until it matters.
Altitude Diver is one of the specialty certifications that counts toward PADI Master Scuba Diver, and the first of your two dives can often be credited as an Adventure Dive toward PADI Advanced Open Water Diver, so nothing here goes to waste if you haven't done that certification yet.

Prerequisites
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I actually need this course if I only dive around Johannesburg?
Given Johannesburg's elevation, arguably more than most. Every dive here is technically an altitude dive, so this course closes a gap that applies directly to your local diving, not just to dives on far-off mountain lakes.
Do I need Advanced Open Water before the Altitude Diver course?
No, a PADI (Junior) Open Water Diver certification is enough. It's worth doing before Advanced rather than after, though: completing the first Altitude dive and its knowledge review earns an Adventure Dive credit toward Advanced Open Water. If you dive inland around Gauteng, you're already diving at altitude on every dive anyway.
How many dives does the Altitude Diver course include?
Two open water dives at an altitude site, focused on dive computer adjustment, table calculations, and altitude-specific dive planning and emergency procedures.
What actually changes about diving at altitude?
Reduced atmospheric pressure at elevation affects how your body absorbs and releases nitrogen, which means standard sea-level dive tables and some computer defaults can give inaccurate readings unless properly adjusted for altitude.
Does Altitude Diver count toward Master Scuba Diver?
Yes. It's one of the specialty certifications that can count toward the PADI Master Scuba Diver rating, the highest non-professional classification in recreational diving.
Are air fills included in the course price?
No, and that is deliberate. Air is charged as you use it, per fill, and invoiced to you after your session. Every diver breathes differently, and building a worst-case air allowance into every course fee would mean the lightest breathers subsidising the heaviest, so instead you pay for the air you actually use and the course price stays lower for everyone. We confirm the current fill rate with you when we book your dates, and you are welcome to ask us for it at any point before that. Dive site entrance fees are also paid separately, at the site on the day.
