Description

One boot covers two cylinder sizes here, because the 12 litre short and the 15 litre share a base diameter. Worth checking that before ordering, though: a 12 litre in the taller pattern may take a different boot from the short one, and diameter rather than capacity is what decides it. Fitted, it slides over the base and gives the cylinder a flat footprint. Cylinder bases are convex, which is what makes one unstable on its own and what absorbs the impact when it goes over, and the boot spreads that contact across moulded feet while holding the steel off the ground. Gaps between the feet let water drain rather than sit against the cylinder, which is where corrosion starts under a boot that seals too well. On a moving boat a falling cylinder threatens feet, gear and its own valve. Pull it off periodically, rinse underneath and let both dry before refitting. It suits an owner of a 12 litre short or 15 litre cylinder.
