Bright Weights in South Africa
Bright Weights is a South African brand. It says it was born in 1999 out of a passion for scuba diving, and it designs and manufactures in Cape Town. The brand has since added weighted vests and fitness gear; what we carry is its dive weighting system and a handful of dive accessories.
The slug system
The system is built around the 500g Slug Weights: plastic-coated lead slugs shaped to follow the curve of the body. Working in half kilograms lets you fine-tune buoyancy, and the coating keeps bare lead off your hands and your car boot. The slugs lock onto the Bright Weight Belt, a flexible belt with a patented locking design and no keepers, so the lead stays put as a wetsuit compresses and the belt still comes off in one movement. If you'd rather carry weight on the BCD, the Clip On Weight Straps hold slugs on stainless steel carabiners that clip to a D-ring. They're sold in pairs to keep the load balanced, weights are bought separately, and they're built for daily school use, so re-weighting a student between dives means moving a strap, not rethreading a belt. They aren't a ditchable system like a quick-release integrated pocket, so check that suits your training.
Soft weights for pockets
In an integrated BCD pocket, soft weights sit flatter than blocks and don't press into your hip. The Combi Pack is lead shot in PVC pouches, in 500 g, 1 kg, 2 kg and 3 kg, in black or yellow. The Flex Weights come in the same four sizes but are cut long and narrow, so they lie along a long pocket instead of bunching, with quad-stitched seams so they don't split and shed shot. Choose Flex for long integrated and trim pockets, and Combi for general use.
Accessories
The Communicator is a sealed tube with a steel ball inside. Shake it and a buddy a few metres away turns round, without alerting the whole site the way a tank banger does. It's a signalling device, not an emergency one. The O-Ring Kit holds 25 rings rated to 300 bar in a screw-top holder, covering cylinder valve, hose and regulator seals, the small spare that saves a dive day. The Tank Net comes in eight fitments for steel and aluminium cylinders, sized by material as well as capacity, so check yours before you order. The Fin, Mask & Snorkel Mesh Bag drains on the walk back to the car and closes on a drawstring, in black or neon orange. Browse more in weights and weight systems and freediving weights.
Questions we get asked
How do I order Bright Weights in Johannesburg?
Order the Bright Weights range online from Scuba Evolution in Johannesburg, delivered anywhere in South Africa. Many items are ordered in for you, so ask us about timing on WhatsApp 082 557 3822 before you buy.
Is Bright Weights a South African brand?
Yes. Bright Weights says it has designed and manufactured in Cape Town since 1999.
Do I need keepers with the Bright Weight Belt?
No. The belt holds 500 g slugs with a patented locking design, so there are no keepers to slip, and it still comes off in one movement.
Should I choose the Combi Pack or the Flex Weights?
Both are soft weights in 500 g, 1 kg, 2 kg and 3 kg. Flex Weights are long and narrow for long integrated and trim pockets; the Combi Pack is shot in PVC pouches for general pocket use.
Can I carry Bright Weights on my BCD instead of a belt?
Yes. The Clip On Weight Straps hold slugs on stainless carabiners that clip to a BCD D-ring, sold in pairs to keep the load balanced. They aren't a ditchable system like a quick-release integrated pocket, so check that suits your training.
Which Tank Net fits my cylinder?
It's sized by material and capacity: 6, 7, 10, 12, 15 and 18 litre steel, and 10 and 12 litre aluminium. A steel 12 and an aluminium 12 take different nets.
