DESCENT G2

The Garmin Descent G2 is a watch-style dive computer whose housing, bezel and buttons are moulded entirely from recycled ocean-bound plastic. Garmin covers that case with a sapphire crystal lens and a 1.2 inch AMOLED touchscreen that stays legible in poor visibility.

The case is dive rated to 100 metres and the display runs 390 by 390 pixels. Decompression is Buhlmann ZHL-16c with gradient factors across air, nitrox and trimix to 100 percent oxygen, carrying one bottom gas and up to eleven decompression or backup gases. Dive modes cover single-gas, multi-gas, gauge, closed-circuit rebreather, apnea, apnea hunt and pool apnea. Battery life runs to 27 hours in dive mode and 10 days as a smartwatch.

The result is a computer covering the whole of a diver's water time rather than one discipline. The apnea modes log breath-hold work on the same watch that ran the morning's nitrox dive, so the logbook stays in one place. Dive readiness reads sleep, training load and jet lag, which gives a diver off a long flight a number to weigh before the first descent.

The case measures 45.5 by 45.5 by 15.2 millimetres and weighs 65 grams on the QuickFit 22 millimetre silicone band. Two colourways: black on a black band, and Paloma on a shell pink band. In the box: the watch, an extra-long adjustment strap, a charging and data cable and documentation. The G2 has no air integration, so tank pressure calls for a Descent Mk3i or X50i with a T2 transceiver.
