Description

A side zip is what makes a 5 mm boot possible to get on over a wet foot; a pull-on at the same thickness is a fight on a beach. That thickness covers temperate and colder water, which is what most South African shore diving asks for through the year. A boot does two jobs. It insulates the foot, which loses heat faster than anything else in the water given its surface area and blood flow, and cold feet are usually the first sign a diver is losing heat overall. The second is armour for the ground between the car and the water, whether that is rock, loose gravel, sun-baked concrete or a deck with lead scattered across it. Sizes run UK3 to UK12. Buy the boot before the fins, because it decides the foot pocket size and a fin sized to a bare foot will not close over 5 mm of neoprene. Flush the zip with fresh water and hang the boot upside down to dry. It suits a shore diver in temperate or cold water.
