The mask is nylon with hook and loop tape, cut to the shape of the housing before use, which is how one set fits housings from several makers. That turns a compact in its own brand's housing into a strobe-ready camera, cleans up macro shots spoiled by on-camera flash, and replaces a worn mask on an older rig.
