San-O-Sub in South Africa

San-O-Sub is based in Trezzano sul Naviglio, outside Milan, and describes itself as a mechanical engineering company making gas management systems entirely in Italy, which it says it has done since 1934. Diving is one of four sectors it serves, alongside medical, industrial and special operations. We carry its cylinder valves and the parts that protect and carry a cylinder.

Cylinder valves

Start with the stamp on your cylinder. Both valves screw into an M25x2 neck and have the handwheel on the left. The Mono Valve M25 232 bar has a DIN outlet that takes a yoke regulator once its insert is fitted, so it suits a rental fleet or a family rack with mixed regulators. The Mono Valve M25 300 bar is for 300 bar steel cylinders only; the valve doesn't raise the rating of the cylinder it sits in. Fitting a valve opens a pressure joint, so it's work for a qualified cylinder technician, followed by a leak check. See cylinder valves.

Handles

Carry the cylinder by a handle, not the handwheel, and you'll save a bent spindle. The Fixed Tank Handle clamps below the valve and gives a rigid grip for loading the bakkie or walking the jetty. The Folding Tank Handle lies flat when you put the cylinder down, which is the one for a tight rack or a crowded boat bench. Both are for carrying at the surface, not for hoisting. See cylinder accessories.

Boots

A Cylinder Boot gives a domed steel base a flat footprint so it stands on a boat deck or fill station floor. Size by diameter, not litres: 171 mm for a standard 10 litre, 180 mm for the wider 10 litre steel, and 203 mm for 12 litre short and 15 litre cylinders. Measure first, and pull the boot off every few months to rinse underneath. See nets and boots and cylinders and valves.

Questions we get asked

Is San-O-Sub an Italian brand?

Yes. San-O-Sub is based in Trezzano sul Naviglio near Milan and says it has made its gas systems entirely in Italy since 1934.

Which San-O-Sub valve do I need, 232 or 300 bar?

Match the valve to the pressure stamped on your cylinder. A 300 bar valve doesn't raise the rating of a 232 bar cylinder.

Can I use a yoke regulator on the 232 bar valve?

Yes. The 232 bar valve has a DIN outlet that takes a yoke regulator once its insert is fitted.

Can I fit a cylinder valve myself?

No. Fitting a valve opens a pressure joint, so it should be done by a qualified cylinder technician and followed by a leak check.

What size cylinder boot do I need?

Measure the cylinder's diameter. 171 mm fits a standard 10 litre, 180 mm the wider 10 litre steel, and 203 mm the 12 litre short and 15 litre cylinders.
