Apeks in South Africa
Apeks was started in 1974 by Ken Smith Ainscough and Eric Partington, who built the name from their initials. Its regulators are still made in its own UK factory. In 2012 it became the first manufacturer to meet the EN250A cold-water standard. Regulators make up most of the Apeks stock in the shop.
Choosing an Apeks regulator
The XL4, XL4+ and XL4 Ocea are built on the lightest platform Apeks makes, which suits a baggage allowance. The Ocea's second stage uses bio-based and recycled polymers. The XTX50 carries its hoses on a rotating turret on the DST first stage, so none of them leaves at a sharp bend. The MTX-R has no adjustment knobs and an unfreezable end cap. It was developed for military divers in polar water. The EVX200 seals its own inlet when it comes off the cylinder. Every model is in scuba regulators. A few are Special Order, ordered in after purchase.
Technical kit and servicing
Beyond regulators, Apeks supplies WTX wings, harnesses and backplates, Lifeline reels and spools, and the RK3 and RK4 fins, grouped under technical backplates and harnesses and reels, SMBs and safety. Kit is fitted in the Glenvista shop, and regulator servicing is booked at the same counter with the maker's appointed agent.
